A Picture of Henry Moyerman Playing Marimba

Rotation IV

Rotation IV is the last movement in a series of four short marimba works by Eric Sammut. This short and expressive piece features unique harmonies and free time. Using four mallets, melodies move in many directions and fill many registers. The piece allows for the incorporation of silence as a serious expressive tool. This is one of my favorite short solo marimba pieces, and that is why I chose to make this recording.

Virginia Tate

Virginia Tate is a solo marimba piece by Paul Smadbeck. This minimalistic work utilizes rich and full harmonies. The textures used are thick, allowing accented notes to carry the melody. Using four mallets to play in many different interwinding patterns, this piece slowly shifts from motif to motif. Virginia Tate has been my signature piece since high school, and it was the first marimba piece I ever recorded.
